How to dry citrus
You have probably seen them in a fancy cocktail or accentuating a beautiful dish at a nice restaurant, so it may surprise you that dehydrating your own fruits is a very simple process! All you need is some time and fruit to cut. This article will be focusing on citrus fruits, but please keep in mind that what you learn here may be applied to drying any other fruits or vegetables.
Before you begin, a few things to note:
Cut your citrus thin. The thicker they are, the longer they take to dehydrate
If you want to eat them like chips be aware - if you have a thick rind it will be quite bitter
These are completely customizable; you decide the flavor profile depending on the spices you add and the amount of water you leave in.
Dried Citrus
Ingredients:
Citrus (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, or anything you would like)
Spices (ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves)
Sugar (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 200F
Slice your fruit to the desired width (the thinner they are, the faster they dehydrate)
Lay the fruit onto a baking sheet and sprinkle your desired spices onto them, rubbing them in to make sure they are evenly spread
Place the sheet into the oven and let the fruit dehydrate for 2-3 hours depending on the width of your slices
You can check them every so often until they have the desired dryness. One side will be drying more than the other, so make sure you flip them to take a look at the side touching the pan.
