Seasoned Mexican sour cream
Mexican sour cream and sour cream are similar in name but completely different in texture and flavor. Mexican crema as it’s called has a 30% fat content compared to sour cream, which has 20%. This gives Mexican crema a less acidic flavor and a thinner consistency. Now, this recipe will not be teaching you how to make crema, but you will learn how to change plain sour cream into a signature topping.
Before you begin, a few things to note:
Adding some simple ingredients to any store-bought base will improve the flavor.
If you don’t have the consistency you want, feel free to add more hot sauce or lime juice.
Get some good quality limes, you want to use the zest and juice
Seasoned sour cream
Ingredients
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 lime (juiced and zested)
1/2 tablespoon ground cumin
1/2 tablespoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon hot sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Add this sour cream to any dish with hearty meats or lots of starch.
Instructions
Mix all of your ingredients in a large bowl, add the lime juice bit by bit until you get the consistency that you like.
I felt ridiculous typing out “1”, but it really is that simple. It’s just a matter of knowing what ingredients go where. The mayonnaise gives a more umami flavor to the sour cream, the spices are consistent with Mexican flavor profiles while the lime gives this topping a pop of freshness.
